DECC Releases Energy Statistics For Third Quarter 2011

As stated in the DECC's December Energy Statistics report, which covers energy trends and prices each quarter, indiginous production of fuels in the UK fell by 19.2% in the third quarter of 2011, when compared with a year earlier.

Total primary energy consumption for energy use fell by 2.3%. Production of oil fell by 22.7% for the quarter, however, consumption of oil fell by just 1.8%, compared to an overall energy consumption decrease of 2.3%.

Of electricity generated in the third quarter of 2011, gas accounted for 46.5%, while coal accounted for 23.1%.Nuclear generation increased by 3.4 percentage points, to account for 19.1%, whilst renewables share of electricity generation increased by 0.9 percentage points to 9% in the third quarter.

Hydro generation increased by 41.3% on the third quarter of 2010 as a result of higher rainfall in 2011. Offshore wind increased by 30.5%. Overall hydro and wind generation was 15.7% higher than in the third quarter of 2010.

Provisional data suggests that, for fixed consumption levels of electricity of 3,000 kWh per annum, bills increased by £38 to £445. For fixed consumption levels of gas, of 18,000kWh per annum, bills increased by £62 to £720.
