Harlequin Joins All-Party Parliamentary Environment Group

22nd December 2010

Clarehill Plastics Managing Director Brian McCann has been invited to join the All-Party Parliamentary Environment Group. The group which was set up 15 years ago comprises 197 MP’s and some 27 peers along with associate members from industry and NGO’s.Membership is by invitation only and includes a distinguished list of leading companies such as BAE, Goldman Sachs, Siemens and Tescos.

The group meets 6 times a year in the House of Commons and seeks to strengthen the influence of parliamentarians on policy and debate on the environment.Meetings take in talks by leading politicians and captains of industry; they include opportunity for debate and time to put questions to ministers.

The group takes an interest in all areas of environmental policy from carbon emissions to sustainability, from renewable energy sources to waste management. The group commissions highly respected reports on key policy areas; most recently a review of all areas ofEU environment policy.

At Brian McCann's first meeting of the Group in mid December, the speaker was Mark Prisk, the Minister for Business and Enterprise in which the Minister developed the theme of the business opportunities for the UK from renewable energy. In the Q&A sessions which followed the talk Brian highlighted the confusion of regulations relating to fuel storage in the UK at present, and pressed for the need for a simpler and unambiguous regulatory requirement involving universal bunding. This would have highly beneficial environmental outcomes which could provide the platform for significant business opportunities. The minister’s interest and time taken to listen and address points made by group members was impressive and made the event very worthwhile for all involved.
