Failure To Bund Costs Polluter £10,073.28

1st October 2010

An oil spill at a former pie factory which was being demolished in Wellingborough cost a Northamptonshire company a £5,000 and ordered and £5,073.28 costs.

The spill originated from an uncontained Single Skin Oil Tank. According to the Environment Agency the spill was foreseeable as the installation failed to incorporate adequate secondary containment, was not bunded and was not secure.

The Environment Agency, said the oil spill had polluted 700m of the brook and had necessitated a clean-up operation which involved both the Agency and clean-up contractors.

The Environment Agency’s Chris Willis said, 'Oil in the water can harm wildlife, affect fish and taint drinking water at very low concentrations. This pollution was avoidable and continued even after it was brought to the attention of the company. Responding to the problem straight away could have avoided this becoming such a serious matter.'
