Harlequin Welcomes The Water Environment (Oil Storage) (Scotland) Regulations 2006
1st March 2010
Bunded tank specialist HarlequinOil Tanks, has given a warm welcome to The Water Environment (Oil Storage) (Scotland) Regulations 2006 coming into full effect on 1 April 2010.
The new Regulations establish minimum standards for the storage of oil at agricultural, commercial, industrial and institutional premises in Scotland, together with domestic storage installations with an installed capacity greater than 2,500 litres. Domestic oil storage installations with an installed capacity of less than 2,500 litres are regulated by The Scottish Government's Building Standards Division.
The new Regulations are applicable to any kind of oil includingpetrol, diesel, mineral oil, heating oil, lubricating oil, waste oil, vegetable oil and plant oil. The provision of adequate secondary containment, is at the heart of the Regulations, which state that all oil storage tanks with a capacity greater than 200 litres should be bunded . This can be achieved via the construction of either a suitable masonry bund, or the installation of an integrally Bunded Tank.
Harlequin's Marketing & Customer Service Manager John Switzer says, "As an environmentally responsible manufacturer, we welcome the introduction of the new Regulations. As a Bunded Oil Tank specialist, we also welcome the emphasis upon the provision of adequate secondary containment at oil storage installations. This brings Scottish Regulations into line with those that have prevailed in many mainland European countries for some time. Whilst regulatory compliance can be achived through the construction of a masonry bund, at most installations, fitting a Bunded Tank will be cheaper, quicker and easier."
"A Bunded Tank consists of a 'tank within a tank' and is proven to be the single, most important intervention in protecting against spillage. The inner tank acts as the primary fuel storage container. The outer tank acts as a failsafe so that in the event of a spill, spilt fuel will be safely and securely contained and a potentially costly environmental pollution incident averted. At Harlequin, we can supply Bunded Tanks for the storage of Biodiesel, Diesel, Heating Oil, Kerosene, Waste Oil and Lubricants.
"Ahead of the introduction of the new Regulations, Harlequin resellers in Scotland have seen a significant increase in demand for Bunded Heating Oil, Biodiesel and Diesel Storage Tanks. Indeed, such has been the strength of demand, we've increased production of our range ofFuel Point and Fuel Station Bunded Diesel Storage Tanks. At the same time, we've also had to respond to increased demand for our range of Advance and Basic Bunded Heating Oil Tanks."
"Non compliance with the Regulations is an offence and we'd encourage anyone unfamiliar with the Regulations to contact SEPA for further information. Alternatively they contact their local Harlequin reseller for free, practical advice on how to ensure they comply with the law or visit Harlequin Online.", advises John.
