Considering a tank installation in England or Wales? Read this first!

17th March 2003

As a result of the increasing emphasis being placed upon environmentally responsible fuel storage installations, in England and Wales it is now a legal requirement that oil storage installations are undertaken by an appropriately registered OFTEC (The Oil Firing Technical Association for the Petroleum Industry) Installer. Otherwise, it is a legal requirement under Part J of the Building Regulations in England and Wales that a Building Notice is obtained for each installation.

If you are a householder considering a tank installation, it is a legal requirement that either a Building Notice is obtained or the work is completed by an OFTEC Registered Installer, who has achieved OFT 600A certification.

In the event that neither of these conditions are met, you - the householder - will be in breach of the Building Regulations. Not only can this result in a court appearance and the possibility of unwelcome legal expenses and fines - it may also invalidate your property insurance.

If you are an unregistered OFTEC installer, why not seriously consider OFTEC training? Not only will this save time and hassle on every installation, it will also save you and your customers money!

And of course, if you are an OFTEC Registered Installer, then be sure and promote the benefits of OFTEC registration to your customers. Not only does OFTEC Registration guarantee your customer a professional and legal installation, it now saves them time, money and hassle too! It’s always a good idea to explain this to your customers and where practicable - keep a copy of the new regulations with you for reference purposes.

As an environmentally responsible tank manufacturer and a leading member of OFTEC’s Oil Firing Equipment Group, Clarehill Plastics Limited welcomes these changes to the Building Regulations in England and Wales and hopes that in time, similar changes will be introduced in other markets throughout the British Isles.
